The hormonal coil is made up of a small, flexible plastic T and contains the hormone levonorgestrel. The hormonal coil thus combines the action of the coil with that of the mini-pill. The hormonal coil is a small, flexible plastic T which also has threads for checking and removal. Unlike the copper coil, Gynefix and gold coils, Mirena, Kyleena and Jaydess contains the hormone levonogestrel and thus combines the action of the coil with that of the mini-pill. The hormonal coil is also known as an IUS (intrauterine system).

Mode of action: The hormone creates an impenetrable mucous plug in the cervix that reduces both the mobility of the sperm and the thickening of the uterine lining. Despite the hormone, ovulation occurs as usual.

Insertion: Like all intrauterine contraceptives, the Mirena is inserted via the vagina through the cervix into the uterus. During the procedure, the woman may experience a pulling pain but this is generally well tolerated. If desired, we also insert the hormonal coil under general anaesthetic.

Possible side effects and complications:  Initially, breakthrough bleeding, acne, breast tenderness, headaches and depression. The menstrual periods are usually lighter, shorter and less painful. In rare cases they may not occur at all.

Recommendation: The hormonal coil is particularly well suited for women who would like a long-term and safe method of contraception and who experience particularly heavy and painful periods. The periods are often lighter, shorter and less painful thanks to the hormonal coil.

Duration of use: Jaydess up to 3, Mirena and Kyleena up to 5 years

Effectiveness:  Very high effectiveness with a pearl index of 0.2 – 0.3.
