Involuntary childlessness

For many of us, children are the true expression of a loving relationship and a complete family. The failure to conceive and involuntary childlessness are often the source of much pain for women as well as men.

A couple are considered involuntarily childless when pregnancy has not occurred after 12 months of sexual activity without the use of contraceptives. There is no exact information on the number of involuntarily childless couples in Germany, with estimates ranging from 12% to 15% of all couples of child-bearing age. 30% of infertility is due to female factors alone, 30% due to male factors alone and 30% due to both female and male factors. For up to 10% of couples, infertility remains unexplained.

Medical treatment helps over 50% of involuntarily childless couples to fulfil their desire for a biological child. The most appropriate fertility treatment will depend on the reason for infertility and the individual situation of each couple.

After a diagnosis, many couples begin infertility treatment and soon feel under pressure to resort to ever more invasive measures. It is recommended to explore personal boundaries before starting infertility treatment and discuss this with a doctor.

Couples who want children can positively influence their fertility through a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
